Educator turned Adventurer!
I am Vicky Allen, educator, teacher-trainer, presenter and author exploring the world with my husband, Kenny.
In the mid 70’s, I earned a Master’s in Deaf Education from Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon. Since then, my teaching experience has been varied. I have taught deaf students at the high school level in schools for the deaf both in Oregon and Florida, mainstreamed programs in Texas and Nevada and even rural areas for the government of Manitoba.
During my time in Nevada, I also taught ASL to hearing adults at the community college level and developed a graduate level ASL course for the University of Nevada for teachers of hearing students. Personally, I began using ASL with my own hearing toddlers and those of friends as a way of promoting early communication and understanding.
In the early part of 2009, when I changed to the field of teaching EFL/ESL, the world opened up for me. I was offered a contract to teach EFL in a middle eastern college and, because of this, other great opportunities arose. For the past 6 years, I have been presenting ASL for ESL as an aide in the teaching of English as a Foreign Language at conferences and in workshops, in different parts of the world.
Please join me as we explore and learn together!
Up and coming illustrator!
I am excited to introduce to you, Dana, who is a highly talented illustrator from Indonesia. I couldn't have found a better person for the daunting job of drawing ASL illustrations. Those, who are involved with ASL, know just how difficult the task is! He has been both willing and patient to perfect the illustrations to match what I asked. I am thrilled to have worked with Dana on new book, American Sign Language as a Bridge to English and look forward to working with him on the next project.
